The Spotlight Initiative is a joint EU/UN initiative aims at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls.
As the European Union, United Nations and Government of Liberia Spotlight Initiative funded community engagement activities continue, our team had frank conversations with residents of Royesville, Montserrado County about their basic human rights especially health and social protection. They said that although there's generally a calmed atmosphere, there's no police station for perpetrators of constant violence to be brought to justice and they're no public health facilities. Cases are resolved by themselves while terrible cases are sent to Brewerville Police station. They recommended that increase awareness around issues relating to violence against women and girls continue since violence is on the increase during this time. Young girls and children rights are increasingly being abused by men in the communities.
However, in collaboration with local authorities, the project is providing opportunities for women and girls to prevent abuse during the COVID-19 pandemic and alternatives to seek help in the event of abuse while reinforcing the adherence to the public health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
